Denim has a weird and conflicting history, reputedly taking its name from Nîmes, a town in France so cool it wears a little hat over the letter i. The phrase Serge de-Nîmes gave rise to the word ‘denim’ and the rest is history. Although it made it’s name in France, it was actually invented by the Italians in the port of Genoa, which in the French language was pronounced ‘Genes’ which lead to the word Jeans.
